Before you start

Get the essentials together.

A little preparation makes the form easier to complete and gives buyers the information they need.

  • Your car’s details

Make, model, year and current mileage. Have the trim, fuel, gearbox, colour and body style ready too.

  • Your photos and description

Use your own clear photos. Note the condition, history you can confirm, equipment and any faults.

  • Your price and town

Choose the full asking price in pounds and the town where buyers can view the car.

  • An email you can access

You’ll use it to set up your account, sign in and receive buyer enquiry notifications.

The advert form

Four steps to your advert.

Move forward when each section is ready. You can go back and check your details before submitting.

  1. Your car

    Tell buyers what you’re selling.

Enter the make, model, year and mileage. Add the trim or variant, colour, fuel, gearbox and body style so the advert describes the right car.

Worth checking: Use your vehicle documents and the current odometer reading. Enter mileage in miles.

  2. Photos & words

Show the car as it is.

Add up to eight photos, write a useful description and tick the features your car actually has. Mention its condition, recent work, history and anything a buyer should know.

Worth checking: The first photo becomes your cover. Descriptions must contain 20–10,000 characters.

  3. Price

Set your price and contact details.

Enter your full asking price in pounds, your seller name and your town. You can also add a postcode and an optional phone number. Enquiries use your account email.

Worth checking: Your email stays off the public advert. A phone number is public if you include one.

  4. Review

    Preview, then submit for review.

Check the advert preview, your photos, price and details. When you’re happy, choose Submit for review. Your advert is saved and you’ll receive an on-screen reference.

What happens next: Your advert waits for review before appearing publicly. Follow its status in your garage.

Make the first look count

Clear photos. Useful details.

Photograph the car in daylight with room around it. A simple background helps buyers see the bodywork, and an honest description helps them decide whether to get in touch.

Use the remaining spaces for important equipment, wheels or any damage. Only include photos you have permission to share.

After you submit

Keep everything in your garage.

Read buyer enquiries

Messages for your adverts are saved in your garage. Check it regularly and reply directly by email to discuss the car or arrange a viewing.

Keep the advert accurate

Update your price, description, details or photos using Edit advert. Saving changes returns it to review before it appears publicly again.

Mark it sold

Once the car has sold, choose Mark as sold to remove the public advert. Use Withdraw advert if you simply want to stop advertising.

Selling as a business?

A few useful answers

Before you press submit.

Still need a hand with your account or advert?

Contact GottaCar
Is it really free for everyone?

Yes. GottaCar is completely free for buyers, private sellers and dealers. Creating an account, listing a car and making an enquiry all cost £0. There is no listing fee, subscription or sales commission, and you do not need to enter card details to place an advert.

Why do I need to confirm my email?

Your email connects you to your adverts and buyer enquiries. After registering, use the email link to set your password and confirm the address, then sign in. If the message is missing, check your junk folder and use Reset password on the account page to request a fresh link.

Does my advert go live straight away?

New adverts are saved for review before they appear publicly. You will see a confirmation and an advert reference after submitting. Open your garage to check its status. Saving changes to an advert sends it for review again and takes it off the public listings until approved.

Can I list a car without photos?

You can submit without photos, but clear pictures help buyers understand the car and its condition. You can add or replace photos later in your garage. Each manually created advert can have up to eight photos in total; saving an edit sends the advert back for review.

What if my photos will not upload?

Use JPG, PNG or WebP files. Each image must be no larger than 5 MB or 20 megapixels, and the whole upload must stay within 24 MB. Convert HEIC images to JPG, or export a smaller version from your photo app. Choose the files again and retry if an upload is interrupted.

Can I advertise more than one car?

Yes. Each car gets its own advert and all your submitted cars appear in your garage. Please leave two minutes between submissions. Accounts can submit up to ten new adverts in any 24-hour period. These limits help prevent duplicate and spam submissions; they do not introduce a charge.

How do buyers contact me?

For an advert you create in your account, buyer messages are saved in your garage. We’ll also try to notify you at your account email address. Check your garage regularly, even if no email arrives. Your email address is not displayed on the advert. An optional phone number is public if you add one, and you can reply to buyer messages directly by email.

What should I do when the car sells?

Open your garage, find the advert and choose Mark as sold. This removes it from the public listings. If you simply want to stop advertising, choose Withdraw advert. The advert remains in your garage, and you can submit it for review again if needed.
